Note, The best antidote against the poison of sin is to walk in the Spirit, to be much in conversing with spiritual things, to mind the things of the soul, which is the spiritual part of man, more than those of the body, which is his carnal part, to commit ourselves to the guidance of the word, wherein the Holy Spirit makes known the will of God concerning us, and in the way of our duty to act in a dependence on his aids and influences. To be under law was fatal to Jerusalem. It needs to be boistered by Gods spirit. And here we may observe that as sin is called the work of the flesh, because the flesh, or corrupt nature, is the principle that moves and excites men to it, so grace is said to be the fruit of the Spirit, because it wholly proceeds from the Spirit, as the fruit does from the root: and whereas before the apostle had chiefly specified those works of the flesh which were not only hurtful to men themselves but tended to make them so to one another, so here he chiefly takes notice of those fruits of the Spirit which had a tendency to make Christians agreeable one to another, as well as easy to themselves; and this was very suitable to the caution or exhortation he had before given (Galatians 5:13; Galatians 5:13), that they should not use their liberty as an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another. Look at all the notches on my belt." At first sight it seems most extraordinary, if the apostle referred to such a Scripture for the proof of the importance of one seed; because, if there is anything that lies on the surface of the passage, it is the multiplicity of the seed a seed expressly said to exceed all reckoning. I say something that is not of the Lord. The sense is, "if you contend with each other;" and the reference is, probably, to the strifes which would arise between the two parties in the churches - the Jewish and the Gentile converts. Which means: Peaceable Christians realize that apart from Jehovah God, they have no lasting peacemaking ability. For the foundation was at stake. Finally, he concludes by putting the sentence of death, if I may so say, on circumcision, and all such as might adopt it. The gospel had led Peter to treat the Jews and Gentiles all alike. Is not this just the law for you! [Note: Longenecker, p. This would have flowed from Peter's conduct. 25 If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Hence the point is not at all whether we have intrinsic power, but whether He is not now abiding in us as "a Spirit of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." Thank You, Jesus, for Your forgiveness and for Your love and for Your grace to me.". But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. The sense is, if you contend with each other; and the reference is, apparently, to the strifes which would arise between the two parties in the churches - the Jewish and the Gentile converts. When the emphasis of man became on the physical fleshly side of him, he no longer was one with God, who is a Spirit and must be worshipped in spirit and in truth. The offense of the cross would cease." This is shown still more fully in the allusion to baptism: "As many of us as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ." My responsibility is defined by the place in which I am found. But where the Gentiles are mentioned, God only speaks of seed without reference to number. For ye are all the children of God." This, then, is not what the apostle Paul has in view, but in contrast with it. This is Christianity; and when the soul thankfully accepts from God this blessed liberty, the Holy Ghost is given to and acts in the believer as a Spirit of peace and power; so that if there is the flesh lusting against the Spirit, the Spirit resists this, in order that (for such is the true meaning) they should not do the things that they would. So "cursed is the man that continues not in the whole law to do that which is written therein" ( Galatians 3:10 ). This therefore the apostle would have us by all means to watch against. "We, when we were children, were in bondage under the elements of the world; but when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son made of a woman, made under the law, to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons." And now the apostle enters on another part of his subject. No wonder that the apostle attached the greatest moment to the facts of his conversion and call, and that, instead of hiding his lack of familiarity both with the apostles and with the churches in Judea, he glories in it. The sad and dangerous tendency of a contrary behaviour (Galatians 5:15; Galatians 5:15): But, says he, if instead of serving one another in love, and therein fulfilling the law of God, you bite and devour one another, take heed that you be not consumed one of another. He fully allows that the Lord was both made of a woman and made under the law; but what was the ultimate object in view! Note, 1. What comforts the soul, what strengthens and keeps it up, is that He "loved me, and gave Himself for me.". If he wrote to the Romans;, it was transcribed, or at any rate written, by another. They had been idolaters before they became Christians; and to take up Jewish principles in addition to Christ is to turn back again to their cast-off idols. (ii) Remaz, its suggested meaning. Others are sins against our neighbour, and contrary to the royal law of brotherly love, such as hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, which too often occasion seditions, heresies, envyings, and sometimes break out into murders, not only of the names and reputation, but even of the very lives, of our fellow-creatures. We are to journey through life in the sphere of grace and not works, for we are positioned in Christ as a free gift of God. How could it be otherwise with one persecuting at the moment that he was arrested, in hot deadly opposition to God's church up to his most unexpected call from heaven? Because you have been born of the Spirit, you can see it, you can understand it; it's as plain as can be. Causes me to become judgmental. The oneness of the saints with Christ Himself is, as we all familiarly know, clearly intimated. Already "thy seed," the true Isaac, is given, and in that true seed the Gentiles are being blessed. As far as this temper prevails among Christians, they will be ready to slight and despise those whom they look upon as inferior to them, and to be put out of humour if they are denied that respect which they think is their due from them, and they will also be apt to envy those by whom their reputation is in any danger of being lessened: and thus a foundation is laid for those quarrels and contentions which, as they are inconsistent with that love which Christians ought to maintain towards each other, so they are greatly prejudicial to the honour and interest of religion itself. It is wholly apart from works of law. Now, there are two ways that I can be righteous. Nor this only. Was this then a reproach?

] A climactic figurative designation of the hateful working of party enmity, in which they endeavoured mutually to hurt and destroy one another. The law necessarily makes the man, and the man's doings, to be the prominent object. Therefore, you died to that belief and you trusted Jesus' death on the cross for your salvation. That is just another way of saying that the essence of Christianity is not law but a personal relationship to Jesus Christ. I just refer to it for a moment, because it adds much to the beauty of the reasoning in Galatians. Laws are necessary to restrain unprincipled people. Paul was preaching that Jesus paid the complete price for your redemption on the cross. He does not say that it is the complement of it; but most decidedly it flows from the same divine spring of grace. But if ye bite and devour one another, take heed that ye be not consumed one of another. But, further, he refers in a very affecting manner to some personal circumstances how in his own body he was a witness of having nothing to do with flesh; for what God had been pleased to put upon him as serving Him in the gospel was not great power of nature, but that which made him contemptible in his preaching. Love is the sum of the whole law; as love to God comprises the duties of the first table, so love to our neighbour those of the second. is this all?

Now, the law always brings fallen man into importance: such it must be in its principle. Beware of destroying one another. It is evident that the thorn in the flesh was something which left him open to a slight, and made it difficult indeed for any one to understand how a man who was called to be an apostle should find it hard to convey plainly his mind in preaching. So were the others that seemed to be the chief. But meanwhile, under the gospel, there is an express promise of the blessing of the Gentiles when God spoke of the one seed, which is Christ. Christianity brings everything to a climax; it also settles all questions. Trench says that Jesus showed agathosune ( G19) when he cleansed the Temple and drove out those who were making it a bazaar; but he showed chrestotes ( G5544) when he was kind to the sinning woman who anointed his feet. So "stand fast in that liberty wherein Christ has made you free." Take heed that ye be not consumed - As wild beasts contend sometimes until both are slain. It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator." And, as this would be the best means of preserving them from fulfilling the lusts of the flesh, so it would be a good evidence that they were Christians indeed; for, says the apostle (Galatians 5:18; Galatians 5:18), If you be led by the Spirit, you are not under the law. "Now, the other way to be righteous is through faith in Jesus Christ, receiving that grace of God through Him, where God accounts me, as He did Abraham, righteous because I believe. As we saw it in the Corinthians applied to judge the worldliness of the saints there, so here it judges their legalism. (2.) Our Christianity obliges us not only to die unto sin, but to live unto righteousness; not only to oppose the works of the flesh, but to bring forth the fruits of the Spirit too. What makes you righteous before God is your faith, which works in love within your heart and life. Now, it is interesting to me how that those who opt for rules, those who opt for laws, those who want to lay down the laws upon the people, or those who want to live under the laws that are laid down upon them, always seem to be striving. There was no question of revealing His Son in them then. What ground is there for boasting in this? There was no difference in the blessing of Christ: man's guilt and God's grace were alike indiscriminate. Can I be righteous by keeping the law?
